I Am Proud Of Who I Am

To understand why I want to become an MT, you need to know a little bit about me and my life. I was born in 1959 in a small farm town in western Kansas. I learned more about responsibilities and faced more hard times before I was out of elementary school than most people face in their entire lives. I was the 12th child of a family of 13. When I was 3, I was fighting for my life with 3rd degree burns from my waist up from flames from a gas stove. When I was 5, a flood wiped out everything we owned including our crops and we lost our milk cows as well. People in town loaned us army bunk beds since we had lost what little furniture we had. The house was totally degutted almost unrecognizable. We also had an antique organ that was destroyed as well.

Farmers who were not affected by the flood gave us corn to make it through the next year as we were quite hungry most of that year. Mom was terminally ill with a brain tumor. It was hard on all of us to watch her go downhill day after day. When I was 7, mom died. Dad never coped with mom’s death. Back then, they didn’t treat depression like they do now and Dad always told us younger kids that as soon as we turned 18 and his responsibilities to us were over as he saw it, then he would kill himself. When I was 19, he killed himself. It was 3 months after my little brother turned 18. There was never any money for college and I had no help becoming self sufficient. I have strived for what training I could pick up for free through the years.

10 years ago, an aneurysm ruptured on the brain stem level of the brain. If you know anything about the brain stem, you would know living through that is considered next to impossible. I learned to walk again, eat solid food again and regain my life back. I worked hard at my rehabilitation. First I tried to play volleyball with the family. That first time, I never did hit the ball and every time I tried, I fell down. My big strong nephew picked me up and brushed me off, and I would try again. The next time, I hit the ball once and didn’t fall at all. Then I got involved with hot air ballooning. While chasing the balloon, you have to run and watch the balloon at the same time. It is tricky, but fabulous rehabilitation for a condition like mine and I would have to say I did pretty well. My friend that owned the balloon sold it and I miss the flying. SN:0MA9N2ESY

I am now going through a divorce after 27 years of hard marriage and want to do something for myself for the first time in my life. Along with a medical transcript degree, I want a Veterinarian degree. I love animals and want to do what I can to save each and every one of them. I have 6 mustangs that I adopted from the BLM. They were all wild mustangs and I have tamed them all and getting where I can ride one of them. Some of the mustangs are shot or sold for slaughter. I just wanted to save as many as I could. Mostly I want to accomplish everything I can and make myself feel like I am proud of who I am and what I have accomplished with my life.
